Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Deception

I quickly shoved the envelope from Eleanor under my blanket just as Daniel approached the bed.
He offered a warm, artificially sweet smile that made my skin crawl.
He handed me the clipboard, claiming it was standard hospital discharge paperwork.
I looked down at the neatly typed document.
Buried under pages of medical jargon was the legal authorization for the second mortgage on my family home.
He thought I was too exhausted and drugged from the delivery to actually read the fine print.
He thought I would just sign blindly, trusting the man who promised to protect me.
I picked up the blue pen, my hand trembling slightly.
I did not write my actual name.
I deliberately scrawled a completely illegible, fake signature that would instantly void the document in any legitimate court.
I handed the clipboard back to him with a tired sigh.
He took it quickly, visibly relieved, and practically ran out of the room to process it.
He had no idea he had just handed the bank a worthless piece of paper.
Over the next three months, our home turned into a bizarre theater production.
Lily grew more beautiful every single day, bringing light into my dark world.
Daniel, however, became completely unhinged.
The deadline for his blackmail payment to Marcus came and went.
Since my fake signature voided the mortgage, Daniel never got the money.
He started selling off his expensive watches and liquidating his stock portfolio in total panic.
Despite his massive financial crisis, Daniel suddenly became obsessed with planning Lily's baptism.
He insisted on booking the most expensive luxury hotel banquet room in the city.
He invited all his senior partners, important clients, and wealthy relatives.
I realized exactly what he was doing.
He was building a public facade of ultimate success and family stability to hide his impending ruin.
He wanted his bosses to see him as a reliable family man right before the embezzlement rumors surfaced.
I let him plan the extravagant party.
I even helped him pick out the expensive floral arrangements and the gourmet catering menu.
I compiled every piece of evidence, every photo, and every bank record into one thick manila folder.
The night before the baptism, I checked our joint account one last time.
He had used the last of my personal maternity savings to pay the deposit for the hotel ballroom.
He actually believed he had outsmarted everyone.
I closed the laptop and walked into Lily's nursery.
I looked at my sleeping daughter and promised her that she would never have to live in a house built on lies.
The next morning, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and put on a stunning red dress.
It was the dress I had worn on our very first anniversary.
I pinned my hair up flawlessly and applied my favorite red lipstick.
I picked up my leather handbag, feeling the heavy weight of the manila folder inside it.
We arrived at the hotel, and I smiled perfectly as Daniel introduced me to his boss.
May you like
But as we sat down at the head table, I noticed a familiar woman walking into the back of the ballroom.
It was Chloe, wearing a black veil, and she was carrying a baby that looked exactly like Daniel.
