Chapter 2 - The Bleeding Night

Ethan did not raise his hands.
He subtly pushed Claire behind him, shielding her entirely from Grant's line of sight.
"You are making a massive mistake, Grant," Ethan said with a calm, lethal edge.
Grant chuckled, keeping the rifle perfectly steady.
"The only mistake was my mother thinking a billionaire would not be curious about a knocking wall."
"Put the gun down and I will buy the entire estate from you tomorrow," Ethan offered.
"We don't need your money, Ethan, we already have Claire's trust fund," Grant sneered.
Grant placed his finger on the trigger, his eyes narrowing in the dark.
Ethan knew a man like Grant was a coward who had never actually taken a life face-to-face.
Before Grant could pull the trigger, Ethan lunged forward with terrifying speed.
He grabbed the hot barrel of the rifle and shoved it violently toward the ceiling.
A suppressed shot hissed through the air, shattering a crystal chandelier above them.
Glass rained down upon the hallway as Ethan drove his knee into Grant's stomach.
Grant gasped for air, dropping the weapon and collapsing to the expensive carpet.
Ethan grabbed the heavy rifle, fully prepared to end Grant's life.
"No, Ethan, please!" Claire begged, her voice trembling in the dark.
Ethan stopped, his breathing heavy, and threw the gun over the balcony to the marble floor below.
He grabbed Claire's hand and pulled her down the servant's staircase toward the kitchen.
They burst through the heavy oak doors and ran out into the freezing, torrential rain.
The cold mud soaked Claire's bare feet, but she did not stop running.
They rushed toward the open lawn where Ethan's damaged helicopter was parked.
Ethan pulled the cabin door open, expecting to find his pilot waiting inside.
Instead, the pilot's seat was empty, smeared with a massive pool of fresh blood.
A cell phone rested on the dashboard, glowing brightly in the dark cabin.

Ethan picked it up and saw an active voice call on the screen.
"Did you really think my son was the only security I had in this house, Ethan?" Vivian's voice whispered through the speaker.
