Chapter 9 - The Edge of the Roof

The wind on the hospital roof was deafening, whipping violently against their faces like frozen razors.
Roman raised his gun, squinting through the blinding curtain of heavy snow.
Marcus was standing near the unguarded edge of the building, holding Lily tightly in her wheelchair.
The young girl was sobbing uncontrollably, her frail body shaking in a thin hospital gown.
"Throw the gun over the edge, Roman!" Marcus screamed over the howling storm.
Roman limped forward, his shoulder burning with absolute agony, but he refused to lower his weapon.
"Let the girl go, Marcus, this is strictly between you and me," Roman shouted back.
"Take out your phone and initiate the digital transfer of the family accounts, or I push her over right now!" Marcus threatened.
He tipped the wheelchair dangerously forward, leaving Lily balancing precariously on the absolute edge of the abyss.
Roman cursed loudly and pulled his encrypted phone from his pocket, ready to surrender his entire empire to save the innocent girl.
Claire stared at the wheelchair, her keen eyes piercing through the thick, swirling snow.
She noticed the small, red mechanical brake levers on the back wheels were completely locked in the down position.
Marcus was struggling to balance the chair, but he could not actually push it forward without unlocking the brakes first.
Claire subtly caught Roman's eye and tapped her own leg twice, a silent, desperate signal.
Roman understood immediately.
He pretended to fumble with the phone, buying himself a crucial, life-saving second of distraction.
With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, Roman ripped off his heavy, blood-soaked overcoat and hurled it directly into Marcus's face.
The heavy, wet fabric blinded the traitor completely for a fraction of a second.
Roman charged forward and tackled Marcus with the full weight of his body.
The two men crashed violently onto the snowy roof, sliding dangerously close to the slick edge.
Marcus fought wildly, pulling a combat knife and slashing blindly at Roman's ribs.
Roman ignored the slicing pain, grabbed Marcus by the collar, and drove his fist ruthlessly into the traitor's face.

The ice beneath them suddenly gave way, crumbling under the violent weight of their struggle.
Claire screamed in absolute horror as both men slid completely off the edge of the building and vanished into the dark, freezing storm.
