Chương 1 - The Translation

Meline stopped pouring the two-hundred-dollar wine.
The sounds of the restaurant seemed to recede into a dull, distant hum.
For the entire evening, she had endured the snapped fingers, the insults, and the deliberate humiliation.
She had endured it for her mother.
But listening to a Wall Street vulture casually plot to destroy four thousand working-class families was a line she could not ignore.
Meline carefully placed the bottle of Château Margaux on the table with a soft clink.
She looked directly into Preston Caldwell’s cold, predatory eyes.
She did not blink.
"The word you are looking for is 'tasfiyah,' Mr. Caldwell," Meline said, her voice ringing out in absolutely flawless, unaccented Levantine Arabic.
Gideon Hayes dropped his fork onto his china plate with a loud crash.
Preston froze entirely, the smug smile instantly vanishing from his face.
"It means liquidation," Meline continued in Arabic, her tone as sharp as shattered glass.
"Though your pronunciation is almost as atrocious as your plan to steal the pensions of four thousand innocent workers."
The two other executives, who did not speak the language, stared in utter confusion at their suddenly pale boss.
Preston’s face turned a violent shade of red as he struggled to comprehend what was happening.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" Preston hissed in English, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and rage.
"I am the peasant you just confessed federal crimes to," Meline replied effortlessly in English.
She leaned in slightly, resting her hands on the pristine white tablecloth.
"And just for the record, the SEC does not need a leak to investigate you."
She smiled a perfectly practiced, diplomatic smile.
"They just need a recorded witness."
Preston shoved his chair back so violently it tipped over and crashed onto the floor.
"Simon!" Preston roared, causing the entire dining room to fall dead silent.
The general manager sprinted over, his face drained of all color.
"Fire this worthless girl right now, or I will buy this restaurant tomorrow just to burn it to the ground!" Preston screamed.
Simon did not even look at Meline to ask for an explanation.
He pointed a shaking finger toward the kitchen and told her to get out and never come back.
Meline untied her black apron and dropped it onto Preston’s plate.
She turned and walked out of the silent dining room with her head held high.

But as she pushed through the kitchen doors, her heart began to hammer violently against her ribs.
She had just painted a massive target on her back, and Preston Caldwell was not a man who left loose ends alive.
