Chapter 5 - The Stolen Identity

I nearly crashed the car into the concrete median.
"That is biologically impossible," I yelled at Marcus over the phone.
"Evelyn has been planning this since the day you left Luca," Marcus explained frantically.
"She cannot change my actual DNA," I argued.
"She doesn't have to," Marcus sighed heavily.
"What did she do?" I demanded, my hands gripping the steering wheel.
"During your fertility treatments years ago, Evelyn bribed the clinic to swap your harvested eggs."
The air completely left my lungs.
"She secretly replaced your viable eggs with a donor's eggs," Marcus revealed.
My vision blurred with sudden, overwhelming tears.
"So the children you carried and gave birth to are biologically Luca's, but they are not genetically yours."
I pulled the car violently onto the shoulder of the highway and slammed the brakes.
I turned around to look at the twins sitting innocently in the back seat.
They had my smile.
They had my laugh.
But did they actually share my blood?
"Evelyn engineered this so she could claim custody as Luca's lawful wife, while completely erasing your legal rights," Marcus said.
"I carried them for nine months," I sobbed.
"In the eyes of the law, you are just a surrogate who kidnapped the billionaire's heirs," he warned.
I hung up the phone and buried my face in my hands.
The two black SUVs finally pulled up behind my parked car.
I wiped my tears and locked the doors, refusing to surrender.
Luca stepped out of the lead vehicle.
He walked slowly toward my car, his face an unreadable mask of cold authority.
He tapped on the glass, gesturing for me to roll down the window.
I cracked it just an inch.
"You cannot run from me, Nia," Luca said quietly.
"Evelyn swapped my eggs," I blurted out desperately.
Luca frowned, clearly caught off guard by the accusation.
"What insane lie is this?" he asked.
"She set me up so she could steal my babies," I cried.
Luca stared at me, searching my eyes for any sign of deception.
He reached into his tailored jacket and pulled out a manila folder.
"I just came from the independent hospital, Nia."
My heart stopped completely.
"I had my personal doctors run a rapid DNA test on the water glass your son used at the restaurant," Luca said.
He slid the official medical document through the cracked window.
"The results prove Leo is undeniably my biological son."
I looked down at the paper, absolutely terrified of what else it said.
"And it also proves that you are unequivocally his biological mother," Luca stated softly.
I looked up at him in pure shock.
"Marcus lied to me," I whispered.
May you like
"Marcus has always lied to you," Luca replied.
He forcefully shattered my driver's side window with a heavy metal flashlight, reaching in to unlock the door.
