PART 2: Grandma's Secret

The erratic beep… beep… beep… cutting through the heavy silence of the living room felt like a ticking time bomb. Grandma Evelyn’s hand froze mid-air, her finger still pointed accusingly at Sophie. The righteous anger that had flushed her face just moments ago instantly evaporated, leaving behind a sickly, pale complexion.

"Evelyn?" Sophie’s father, Arthur, stepped forward, his eyes shifting from his trembling mother to the pristine, leather designer purse resting on the coffee table. "What is that?"

"It’s nothing! Just my… my medical monitor," Evelyn stammered, her voice suddenly thin and brittle. She lunged forward to grab the bag, but Arthur was faster. He snatched the purse away, unzipping it with a sharp, decisive rip.

Everyone held their breath as Arthur reached inside. He bypassed the wallet, the keys, and the cosmetics, his fingers closing around a small, velvet-lined pouch. As he pulled it out, the beeping grew louder. He unbuttoned the pouch, and a blinding glint of diamonds caught the living room chandelier light.

It was the heirloom engagement ring—a priceless 1920s platinum piece belonging to Sophie’s mother, Clara, which had gone missing that morning. But attached to the ring band with a tiny piece of clear tape was a small, black tile. A bluetooth tracking tag.

The room erupted into a flurry of gasps. Clara covered her mouth, tears of relief and utter confusion springing to her eyes. "My ring... but why would it be in your bag, Evelyn? And why is there a tracker on it?"

Grandma Evelyn sank back into her armchair, looking incredibly small and trapped. She glared at eight-year-old Sophie, her eyes flashing with a mix of resentment and defeat.

Sophie, wiping the tears from her cheeks, finally found her voice. "Because I saw you, Grandma," she whispered, her voice shaking but clear. "This morning, I saw you take it off Mommy's vanity while she was in the shower. You put it in your pocket. I knew nobody would believe me if I just said it, because you always call me a liar..."

Sophie took a deep breath and looked at her father. "So, I hid my school backpack tracker in Grandma's purse when she went to the bathroom. I knew if she took the ring out of the house, I could find it. But then she started blaming me for stealing it, and I couldn't keep the secret anymore. I pressed the 'Find' button on Mommy's phone."
