Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

Norah took the thick envelope from the administrator’s hands.
It carried the official seal of a high-profile Boston law firm.
She waited until the room was empty before breaking the seal.
Inside was a signed, notarized document from Ethan.
It was a full relinquishment of parental rights.
Attached to the legal form was a handwritten letter on a crumpled piece of paper.
Norah unfolded it slowly, recognizing Ethan’s messy handwriting.
Norah,
You were right about everything.
I don't deserve you, and I certainly do not deserve to be a father to Leo.
By the time you read this, I will be in federal custody waiting for a bail hearing I cannot afford.
I thought I was the smartest man in every room, but I played right into the hands of people who wanted to destroy me.
You protected yourself, and you protected Lily.
I am giving you full custody because it is the only decent thing I have done in months.
Do not come to the trial.
Do not let them see me like this.
Goodbye, Ethan.
Norah read the letter twice, her face completely devoid of emotion.
She felt no satisfaction, only a profound sense of closure.
She folded the letter, tore it perfectly in half, and dropped it into the trash can next to her bed.
Caleb walked into the room carrying two cups of terrible hospital coffee.
He looked at the trash can, then at his sister.
“Everything okay?” he asked.
“Yes,” Norah said, looking down at Leo sleeping peacefully in her arms.
“Everything is finally over.”
Over the next two weeks, Norah moved back into the Brookline house.
She had legally secured the property months ago by putting it in a trust under Lily’s name, protecting it from the federal asset seizure.
Ethan’s trial became a local media spectacle, but Norah completely ignored it.
She focused entirely on midnight feedings, soothing lullabies, and building a new routine.
Rebecca came over on weekends, helping with Leo while Norah rested.
Lily thrived, her anxiety melting away without the toxic secret weighing her down.
They had built a strange, beautiful, completely unconventional family.
One sunny afternoon, Norah sat on the back porch, watching Lily study for her SATs at the patio table.
Leo was babbling happily in his swing.
Norah felt a deep, overwhelming sense of peace.

She had survived the worst storm of her life.
The front doorbell rang, breaking the quiet afternoon silence.
