Chapter 8 - The Fire and Foam

The horrible choice hung in the freezing air of the underground garage.

Silas smiled, thoroughly enjoying the sheer terror paralyzing my entire body.

He began counting down from ten, his voice echoing loudly off the concrete walls.

I looked at Evan, who was crying and struggling against the massive mercenary's grip.

I looked at the phone screen, where my innocent sister lay completely helpless.

I knew Silas was a liar and a murderer who would kill both of them the moment I dropped my weapon.

I refused to play his twisted game.

I shifted my aim rapidly upward and pulled the heavy trigger.

The gunshot was deafening, the recoil violently snapping my wrists backward.

I did not shoot Silas or his armed men.

I shot the massive red fire suppression pipe running directly above their heads.

The pressurized pipe exploded instantly, raining down hundreds of gallons of thick, blinding chemical foam.

Silas and his mercenaries screamed in shock as the heavy white foam coated their eyes and weapons.

The sudden chaos caused the mercenary to drop Evan onto the slippery floor.

I sprinted forward through the blinding spray, grabbing Evan's arm and hauling him to his feet.

I yelled for Noah and Luke to run to the armored SUV immediately.

We slipped and slid across the wet concrete, the toxic foam burning my lungs.

I shoved the boys into the backseat of the heavy vehicle and jumped into the driver's seat.

I slammed the heavy steel doors shut, engaging the physical deadbolts just as Silas began firing blindly.

Bullets sparked harmlessly against the thick bulletproof glass of the SUV.

I reached for the ignition button, desperate to start the engine and smash through the garage doors.

Before my finger even touched the dashboard, the engine roared to life entirely on its own.

The digital display screen on the center console flashed a bright, angry red.

The steering wheel locked into place with a heavy mechanical click.

I grabbed the door handle to escape, but the electronic locks had completely disabled my physical controls.

The SUV slammed itself into gear without me touching the pedals.

The vehicle accelerated violently, smashing right through the heavy steel garage doors and launching into the freezing night.

We were trapped inside a two-ton remote-controlled missile, and it was accelerating dangerously toward the open harbor.
