Chapter 2 - The Standoff

The police officers instantly raised their weapons and aimed them directly at Edric's chest.

"Drop the weapon and step away from the girl!" the lead officer shouted, his voice booming through the cramped room.

Edric tightened his grip around Chloe's neck, pulling her limp body slightly upward from the mattress.

A tiny drop of blood appeared where the edge of the scalpel pressed against her pale skin.

"If anyone takes another step, I will cut her throat," Edric warned, his voice deadly calm.

My mother collapsed against the wall, sobbing hysterically and begging him to stop.

I stared at the blade trembling against my sister's neck, realizing that the police could not shoot without risking Chloe's life.

I had to do something to break his focus.

"The police already know about the offshore accounts, Edric," I lied, forcing my voice to project over my mother's crying.

Edric's eyes snapped toward me, a flash of genuine confusion crossing his face.

"They found the encrypted cloud server where you tried to hide Dad's money," I continued, making up the story on the spot.

His grip on the scalpel loosened by a fraction of an inch as his mind raced to calculate this impossible information.

That tiny moment of hesitation was all the lead officer needed.

He lunged forward, grabbing Edric's wrist and violently twisting the scalpel away from Chloe's neck.

Another officer tackled Edric to the floor, instantly pinning his arms behind his back.

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place, securing the monster who had terrorized us for years.

Dr. Cooper rushed into the room, immediately checking Chloe's neck and confirming the cut was only superficial.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for an eternity.

They hauled Edric to his feet and dragged him out of the room while reading him his rights.

A female officer gently placed a blanket over my shoulders and told me we were finally safe.

I looked around the room, expecting to see my mother giving her statement to the police.

The corner where she had collapsed was completely empty.

Her expensive leather purse was gone.

I noticed a small, folded piece of hospital paper resting on the edge of my bed.

I picked it up with trembling fingers and unfolded it.

The note was written in my mother's frantic handwriting.

"I have to destroy the phone before the police search the house, or we will both go to prison."
