Chapter 1 - The Silver Spoon

Luca sat in his leather armchair beside the study window, the amber light of dusk fading over Lake Michigan.

On the mahogany side table rested his evening tea and the silver spoon Dr. Isaac Adler used every day to stir in his liquid vitamins.

For twelve years, Luca had swallowed that bitter draught without a second thought.

Across from him, Elena Harper stood quietly, her knuckles white against the edge of the desk.

"You're sure about what was in that medical report, Luca?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"The laboratory verified the chemical structure twice," Luca replied, his dark eyes fixed on the silver spoon.

"It is an engineered neuro-inhibitor called Styphenol."

"It does not destroy nerves; it coats the myelin sheath and blocks motor transmission entirely."

"Every single morning and evening, Adler has been renewing the paralysis in my spine."

A soft knock interrupted the silence, and the heavy oak door opened.

Dr. Adler walked into the room wearing his tailored tweed coat, carrying his polished leather medical satchel.

"Good evening, Luca," Dr. Adler said warmly, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles.

"I see you haven't finished your evening supplement yet."

Luca kept his face completely expressionless, the cold mask he had worn for thirty years in the Chicago underworld.

"I felt a slight tremor in my fingers earlier, Isaac," Luca said calmly.

"I thought I would wait for you to examine me."

Dr. Adler's eyes flickered with a sudden, microscopic trace of unease.

The doctor stepped forward and reached for the teacup, lifting the silver spoon to inspect the amber liquid.

"Tremors are common in degenerative nerve pathways, Luca; there is no cause for alarm," Dr. Adler said, setting the cup down.

"Drink it down, and I will administer your evening reflex therapy."

Luca did not touch the cup.

Instead, Luca slid the certified toxicological report out from beneath his leather blotter.

"Tell me about Styphenol, Isaac," Luca whispered.

Dr. Adler froze, the color instantly draining from his weathered face.

Before the doctor could utter a word, the heavy double doors of the study burst open.

Dominic Rossi, Luca’s underboss and trusted childhood friend, stepped into the room with three armed bodyguards.

Dominic did not look at Dr. Adler.

Dominic looked directly at Luca, his hand resting casually on the grip of a silver pistol tucked into his waistband.

"I told you twelve years ago to stop looking for miracles, Luca," Dominic said with a chilling smile.
