Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I gasped, looking past the lifeless body on the concrete.
Sophie stood in the doorway, holding a smoking gun.
She looked at me, gave a brief, terrifying smile, and vanished back into the chaos of the warehouse.
I did not wait to figure out why she had saved us.
Daniel and I ran until my lungs burned, finally collapsing near a desolate stretch of the harbor.
The flashing lights of the tactical vehicles were miles away now.
We had made it out alive.
The cartel was decimated, Marcus was dead, and the federal authorities were seizing Voss Financial.
Daniel pulled me into a tight embrace, burying his face in my neck.
"It is over," he whispered, crying softly.
"We can finally be together, Elena."
"I can give you the life I promised."
I pulled back, looking into the eyes of the man I had mourned for half a decade.
The nightmare was finally ending, and my name would be cleared once the authorities reviewed the internal servers.

"Let us get out of here," I said, climbing into the driver seat.
Daniel smiled warmly, but he did not get into the passenger side.
Instead, he took a step back into the shadows and locked the doors from the outside using a remote fob.
I frowned, tugging at the door handle, but it would not budge.
The car radio suddenly clicked on, playing a pre-recorded audio file in the voice of my husband.
"Thank you for getting rid of Marcus and taking the fall for the fifty million, Elena," the recording cheerfully echoed through the cabin.
"I could never have stolen the cartel money without your brilliant diversion."
I screamed his name, but Daniel just waved goodbye and walked away into the dark.

As I slammed my fists against the reinforced glass, a timer on the dashboard ticked down to zero.
The scent of raw gasoline flooded the air vents, and I heard the unmistakable click of an ignition spark beneath my seat.
