Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The cold wind whipped violently against Claire’s face as the motorcycle tore across the massive steel bridge.
Vincent skillfully swerved between two large delivery trucks, desperately trying to lose the pursuing SUVs.
The black vehicles relentlessly matched their terrifying speed, their massive headlights blinding in the rearview mirrors.
A heavily armed mercenary leaned entirely out of the lead SUV’s window with an assault rifle.
“Hold on!” Vincent roared over the screaming engine.
He slammed the heavy brakes, violently skidding the motorcycle sideways across the wet asphalt.
The pursuing SUV aggressively swerved to avoid hitting them, crashing brutally into the concrete barrier.
The massive vehicle flipped violently into the air, landing in a horrific, fiery explosion of twisting metal.
Vincent did not stop to watch the utter destruction.
He accelerated fiercely, driving the motorcycle completely off the main highway and onto a hidden dirt access road.
They rode wildly into the dense, dark forest for twenty agonizing minutes until they reached an abandoned lumber mill.
Vincent finally killed the loud engine, the sudden silence incredibly deafening in the dark woods.
Claire slid exhaustedly off the bike, her legs trembling so violently she nearly collapsed into the dirt.
Vincent caught her effortlessly, pulling her securely against his broad, protective chest.
“You are safe now, Claire,” Vincent promised quietly, his heavy breathing matching her own.
He looked down into her terrified eyes, his intense gaze softening completely for the very first time.
Without warning, he lowered his head and kissed her fiercely, claiming her lips with a desperate, overwhelming passion.
Claire kissed him back completely, wrapping her trembling arms tightly around his neck.
They had successfully survived the brutal ambush, and they were finally safe in the hidden darkness.
Vincent slowly pulled away, resting his warm forehead gently against hers.
“I am going to completely dismantle the Caldwell family tomorrow, and then you will never have to run again,” he vowed.
Claire smiled genuinely, feeling an incredible, overwhelming sense of absolute victory.
She stepped back slightly to catch her breath, needing a moment to process the intense adrenaline.
She walked casually toward a pile of old lumber, noticing a small, blinking light on the ground.
It was a cracked, burner cell phone that must have fallen from Vincent’s tactical vest during the wild ride.
Claire picked it up curiously, accidentally pressing the brightly lit screen.
The screen displayed the most recently received text message, sent just three minutes ago.

The chilling message was from Lucia Moretti.
It read, "The mercenaries were just a distraction; I have the family ledgers, now burn the estate down with our mother inside."
