Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Vincent reacted purely on instinct.

He threw his body over Claire just as the sniper fired.

The high-caliber bullet ripped through the fleshy part of Vincent’s left thigh.

He let out a sharp grunt of pain, collapsing against her.

“Vincent!” Claire cried out, immediately pressing her hands hard against the bleeding wound.

Before the sniper could take a second shot, the deafening roar of police sirens filled the alleyway.

Four armored SWAT trucks smashed through the chain-link fence at the end of the alley.

Dozens of heavily armed officers flooded the area.

A tactical team immediately suppressed the sniper on the roof.

Another team breached the warehouse to secure Silas.

Detective Russo jumped out of the lead vehicle and ran toward them.

“Claire!” Russo yelled, dropping to his knees beside his sister.

“I’m okay, David,” Claire said, her hands covered in Vincent’s blood.

“But Vincent is hit.”

Paramedics swarmed them seconds later.

They loaded Vincent onto a stretcher, applying a tourniquet to his leg.

As they lifted him into the ambulance, Claire climbed in right behind him.

“You’re coming with me?” Vincent asked, wincing in pain.

Claire smiled, a genuine, beautiful smile that made Vincent’s heart skip a beat.

“I’m a nurse, remember?”

“I have to make sure you survive so I can finally go on that date.”

The next morning, Vincent woke up in the master bedroom of his heavily fortified Long Island estate.

His private doctor had removed the bullet and stitched the wound.

The estate was surrounded by his loyal men, and David Russo had stationed two police cruisers at the front gate.

Silas was in federal custody.

Thomas was dead.

The threat was over.

The bedroom door gently opened.

Claire walked in, carrying a tray with coffee and a plate of eggs.

Emma trailed closely behind her, holding her stuffed rabbit.

“You’re awake,” Claire said warmly, setting the tray on the nightstand.

Emma climbed onto the edge of the bed.

“Mommy said you got an owie because you were being a hero.”

Vincent looked at the beautiful woman and the brave little girl who had unexpectedly brought light into his dark, violent world.

He felt something he hadn't felt in twenty years.

Peace.

“I’m just glad you’re both safe,” Vincent said softly.

Claire smiled and kissed his forehead before taking Emma down to the kitchen for breakfast.

Vincent leaned back against the pillows, letting out a long, satisfied sigh.

He reached over to the nightstand to grab his phone.

As he moved the coffee tray, he noticed a small, black encrypted flash drive tucked beneath Claire’s discarded jacket.

Curiosity got the better of him.

He plugged the drive into his secured tablet.

The screen flashed red, requiring a password.

Vincent used a bypass code he had bought from a Russian hacker years ago.

The files opened.

Vincent’s blood ran completely freezing cold.

The drive belonged to the FBI.

It contained a ten-year undercover operation file.

There were hundreds of surveillance photos of Vincent, his father, and his businesses.

But it was the primary handler’s name at the top of the document that made Vincent stop breathing.

Special Agent Claire Bennett.

And under the section labeled "Operation Origin", a single sentence shattered his world entirely:

"Subject's father, Anthony Calder, assassinated by undercover Agent Bennett to trigger succession crisis and destabilize the organization."
