Chapter 7 - The Hostage

I kept my pistol aimed perfectly steady at Vivienne’s chest.

“Let the child go, Vivienne, this is between us,” I ordered, my voice dangerously calm.

Vivienne laughed, a harsh and ugly sound completely devoid of her usual charm.

“You still do not understand how this game is played, do you?”

She tightened her vicious grip on Rosie’s tiny arm, causing the little girl to cry out in pain.

“Your father explicitly ordered me to retrieve the data chip and eliminate all loose ends.”

“If my father wants the data, he can come back from the dead and ask me for it himself.”

“He is already here, Damian,” she sneered triumphantly.

A heavy, authoritative set of footsteps echoed loudly from the dark hallway behind me.

I spun around quickly, ready to fire at whoever was approaching.

Elias, my trusted lawyer, stepped calmly into the doorway holding a suppressed submachine gun.

“Hello, Damian,” Elias said casually, adjusting his expensive suit jacket.

“You work for him too?” I asked, feeling the ultimate sting of absolute betrayal.

“I have always worked for him, Damian, even before the plane crash.”

Elias raised his weapon and aimed it directly at my face.

“Toss the gun on the floor and give Vivienne the ring.”

I looked back and forth between Elias’s deadly weapon and Vivienne’s hostage.

I slowly lowered my pistol and placed it carefully on the plush carpet.

I slid the platinum ring off my finger and tossed it gently onto the bed.

Vivienne eagerly released Rosie to grab the precious ring from the mattress.

The second Vivienne’s gun moved away from the child’s head, I acted.

I dove fiercely across the room, tackling Vivienne violently to the hard floor.

Elias opened fire instantly, the silenced bullets ripping silently through the bedroom walls.

I grabbed the heavy bedside lamp and smashed it brutally into Vivienne’s face.

She dropped her revolver, screaming in absolute agony as blood poured from her nose.

I scooped up Rosie in my left arm and grabbed Vivienne’s dropped gun with my right hand.

I fired three rapid shots blindly toward Elias to force him back into the hallway.

I kicked open the heavy glass doors leading to the master balcony.

The freezing November rain instantly soaked my expensive tailored suit.

“Hold on tight to my neck, Rosie!” I yelled over the roaring thunder.

I stepped over the stone railing and jumped blindly off the balcony into the dark, stormy night.
