Chapter 2 - Forging Armor

The transformation was not a fairy tale.

There were no singing birds and no magical pumpkins.

It was the cold, calculated assembly of armor.

Penelope walked into a Fifth Avenue boutique with a security guard at the door and no price tags on the clothing.

A severe saleswoman took one look at Penelope's gray slacks and prepared to redirect her to a department store.

"I need a dress," Penelope said before the woman could speak.

"My budget is four thousand dollars, it needs to be black, and it needs to look like it could cut a man's throat."

The saleswoman paused before a slow, terrifying smile spread across her face.

The dress they found was a masterpiece of structural engineering and dark silk.

The back plunged dangerously low, suspended by delicate gunmetal chains.

It fitted her like a second skin, revealing curves she had spent a decade hiding beneath wool and polyester.

She bought shoes that were less footwear than weapons, featuring stiletto heels tipped in actual steel.

By Friday afternoon, she sat in an exclusive salon and let a stranger wash the grayness from her life.

Ash brown hair became rich, glossy espresso, chopped into a sharp bob that framed her jawline.

She painted her lips a deep blood-red and lined her eyes in heavy, smoked-out coal.

The woman looking back in the full-length mirror was a dangerous stranger.

She slipped the encrypted burner phone into her jagged obsidian clutch.

She knew Larkin Steves was walking into a death trap tonight.

She also knew that the master ledger he carried on a secure flash drive was worth more than her life.

The cab dropped her off in front of the Continental Hotel at exactly eight o'clock.

Rain slicked the pavement as she stepped out into the neon-lit night.

She approached the massive brass doors of the hotel, her steel heels clicking ominously against the concrete.

A towering bodyguard in a tailored suit stepped into her path and held up a massive hand.

"Private event, lady," the guard growled.

"I am on the list," Penelope said, her voice dripping with ice.

"I don't care who you think you are, nobody gets in without the boss's approval," he sneered, reaching out to shove her shoulder.

Before his fingers could touch her dark silk dress, a massive hand clamped down on the guard's wrist.

May you like

"Touch her," a chillingly familiar voice whispered from the shadows, "and you will spend the rest of your short life looking for your fingers."

Larkin Steves stepped into the streetlights, his winter-ocean eyes locking onto Penelope with absolute, paralyzed shock.
