Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The FBI tactical teams swarmed the railyard with blinding speed.

The Russian mercenaries surrendered immediately, throwing their weapons into the mud.

Leo was handcuffed and dragged away, screaming curses at his sister.

Emily stood completely still in the rain, watching the destruction of her brother's secret empire.

Dante climbed down from the warehouse roof and walked over to her.

He was bleeding, exhausted, and completely stripped of his wealth, but he looked entirely at peace.

"You saved my life again, Emily," Dante said quietly.

"You saved mine," Emily replied, offering a tired smile.

They watched the federal agents secure the area and load Clara's body into an ambulance.

"What happens now?" Emily asked, shivering in the cold.

"The Marino syndicate is officially dead," Dante stated.

"The money is safe in an offshore account that only we know about."

"We can start over anywhere in the world."

Emily looked at the terrifying mafia boss who had finally learned how to laugh again.

She realized she did not want to go back to the mundane corporate world.

She wanted to build a new life with the man standing beside her.

"I hear the Caribbean is nice this time of year," Emily suggested softly.

Dante smiled, a genuine, warm expression that completely transformed his face.

He reached out and gently pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply in the pouring rain.

It was a perfect, flawless victory over the ghosts of their past.

They walked hand in hand toward a waiting taxi outside the police perimeter.

As Dante opened the door for her, Emily felt a sudden, sharp prick on the side of her neck.

She gasped and turned around to see Special Agent Miller standing directly behind them, holding an empty syringe.

Miller smiled coldly as Dante collapsed violently onto the wet pavement, his body completely paralyzed.

"Leo sends his regards," Miller whispered, pulling out his badge to reveal the Russian syndicate logo hidden underneath.
