Chapter 9 - The Reversal

Ethan stood illuminated by the bright orange glow of the burning house, looking completely relaxed.
He casually adjusted the collar of his expensive coat as he watched the roof of the house collapse into the flames.
He smiled at me and said it was a real shame that my beautiful home had to burn down.
He taunted me, claiming that my hidden backup drive was currently melting into a puddle of useless plastic.
With the evidence destroyed, the FBI would officially arrest me for the embezzlement by tomorrow morning.
Ethan gloated that he would collect a massive insurance payout for the fire and finally pay off the cartel.
He proudly declared that he had won the game and that I had absolutely nothing left to fight with.
I stood silently, watching the flames dance in the reflection of his arrogant eyes.
I did not cry, and I did not beg for his mercy.
I looked him straight in the face and offered him a slow, chilling smile.
I calmly informed him that he could not collect a single penny of fire insurance on that property.
Ethan frowned in confusion, asking what I was talking about.
I explained that I had legally transferred the full ownership of the deed to a federal holding company three days ago.
When I discovered his affair with Mia, I knew he would try to take the house, so I completely removed it from my portfolio.
The house he had just burned to the ground technically belonged to the United States government.
Ethan's face turned ash white as the devastating reality of his mistake washed over him.
He had just committed felony arson against a federal property, and he still owed the cartel ten million dollars.
He completely lost his temper, pulling a silver pistol from his coat and aiming it directly at my chest.
He screamed that if he was going down, he was going to take me straight to hell with him.
Before he could even put his finger on the trigger, a dozen red laser sights suddenly appeared on his chest.
Multiple unmarked black vans aggressively swarmed the street, completely surrounding us.
Heavily armed federal agents poured out of the vehicles with their weapons drawn and leveled at Ethan.
I let out a sigh of relief, expecting them to tackle my husband to the ground.
Instead, the lead FBI agent marched directly past Ethan and grabbed my arms.

The agent slammed me against the hood of a nearby car and locked heavy steel handcuffs around my wrists.
He loudly announced that I was under arrest for massive corporate fraud and conspiracy.
