Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The air in the ruined office grew icy cold.

"David?" I whispered, the name tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Your ex-fiancé is working for the Rossi family now," Elena explained, refusing to back down from Luca's furious glare.

"He is their new underboss, and he wants his revenge."

Luca turned to me, his jaw clenched tight.

"You were engaged before?" he asked, his voice suspiciously flat.

"He was a mistake," I said quickly, feeling a desperate need to explain.

"He was controlling, manipulative, and dangerous."

"I left him the night before our wedding and never looked back."

Luca's expression softened just a fraction, a dark protective instinct flashing in his eyes.

"He will never get near you again," Luca swore, pulling me gently against his chest.

For a moment, I felt entirely safe in the arms of this terrifying man.

Then, Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh.

"You are a fool, Luca," she mocked him.

"You are so busy playing the protector that you are missing the real threat."

Luca stepped away from me, his hand resting on his weapon.

"What are you talking about, Elena?" he demanded.

She didn't answer him.

Instead, my cell phone began to vibrate violently in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw my father's caller ID flashing on the screen.

I answered the call, my hand shaking violently.

"Dad?" I asked into the receiver.

"Sophia, please!" my father's voice screamed, followed by the sickening sound of a heavy blow.

Then, the line went dead.
