Chapter 1 - The Master Ledger

For the next four weeks, the Vance mansion felt like a cold war zone. Julian strutted through the halls with Clara on his arm, treating the property as if it were already mine to pack up. He assumed I was spending my days crying in the guest wing.

Instead, I was building a guillotine.

My home office became a war room. I reactivated my old secure servers and pulled the master ledgers for Vance Vanguard. For years, I had let Julian play the brilliant CEO, never mentioning that my grandfather’s holding company secretly held the golden voting shares. But as I dug into the recent quarterly reports, I noticed something disturbing.

Millions of dollars were bleeding out of the company’s R&D division.

One evening, I was staring at a complex spreadsheet of offshore wire transfers. My eyes were burning from fatigue. Leo quietly walked into the room, wearing his dinosaur pajamas, holding a glass of water.

He stood behind my chair, his gray eyes scanning the thousands of rows of data scrolling across my dual monitors.

"Mom," Leo said softly, pointing a small finger at the screen. "The Cayman routing numbers are repeating in a prime sequence, but the output values are artificial. They don't balance by exactly $42,350,000."

I froze. I spun around to look at my eight-year-old son. "Leo, what did you just say?"

"He's hiding forty-two million dollars," Leo stated, his voice completely monotone. "He moved it to an LLC registered on March 14th. That's Clara's birthday."

I stared at the screen, running the macro to verify his observation. He was right. Julian wasn't just abandoning his family; he was embezzling corporate funds to build a secret empire for his mistress.

I pulled Leo into a fierce hug. "You are brilliant, my sweet boy. Absolutely brilliant."
