Chapter 1 - The Witness

The first bruise Adrian ever gave me disappeared beneath a satin sleeve.

The final one was destined to be exposed in front of four hundred wedding guests.

Standing at the altar, Adrian Vale tightened his grip around my hand until my wedding ring bit painfully into my skin.

Camera flashes surrounded us while he kept smiling for every photograph.

"From today on," he murmured.

"You belong to me."

"Know your place."

The minister continued reading the vows as though nothing had happened.

In the front row, Adrian's mother, Celeste, watched proudly.

She wore the expression of someone admiring a flawless victory.

I smiled back.

"You wanted a wife," I whispered.

"Now meet the witness."

For nearly a year, Adrian carefully convinced everyone that I was delicate and unstable.

He dictated what I wore, decided who I could speak to, and checked every phone call.

He then arrived with expensive jewelry after every violent outburst.

Whenever he hit me, he blamed pressure.

Whenever he locked me inside the wine cellar overnight, he called it discipline.

"You force me to do this," he always said.

Celeste encouraged every moment.

"A successful husband deserves complete obedience," she reminded me after seeing bruises on my arms.

"Do not disgrace this family."

They assumed fear kept me beside him.

The truth was far different.

I remained because I needed time to uncover everything hidden beneath Adrian's perfect public image.

Before meeting him, I specialized in forensic accounting for federal investigations.

Adrian dismissed my career as simple bookkeeping.

He never asked what financial crimes I investigated or why I could dismantle fraudulent corporations in hours.

Three months after our engagement, I discovered a loan document carrying my forged signature.

Soon I uncovered six more.

Later that evening, Adrian caught me reviewing company statements.

He smiled, kissed my forehead, and quietly removed the papers.

"Finance is not your concern anymore," he said.

"Just stand beside me and look beautiful."

His arrogance answered every question I still had.

Adrian had secretly secured enormous loans through shell companies registered under my identity.

His plan was simple.

He would marry me, merge our finances, and leave me responsible when everything collapsed.

So I documented every step.

Hidden recordings.

Medical evaluations.

Bank transfers.

Forged paperwork.

Photographs.

I found the private accounting ledger concealed behind a false wall inside his office.

Then I found one final file.

It was the evidence proving his empire was not simply built on fraud.

It had been stolen from the very beginning.

The minister finally asked if anyone objected.

Silence filled the cathedral.

Adrian squeezed my hand harder.

"Good girl," he whispered.

I reached for the hidden zipper on the side of my custom gown.

With one swift motion, I pulled it down and let the heavy silk bodice fall to my waist.

Gasps echoed through the massive church.

My back, shoulders, and ribs were covered in dark purple and yellow bruises.

Adrian dropped his charming smile, his face turning pale with pure panic.

"What are you doing?" he hissed, grabbing for my arm.

I stepped out of his reach and turned toward the entrance.

The massive doors slowly opened.

My attorney walked inside first.

Behind her came two detectives and a federal investigator.

They were escorting the woman Adrian had spent the last decade convincing everyone was dead.

Isabella Vale, his first wife, walked down the aisle with a terrifying smile.

"Hello, Adrian," Isabella announced to the silent room.

"I hear you have been using my offshore accounts again."
