Chapter 16 - Shifting Alliances

We sat in Arthur’s beat-up sedan a few miles from the estate, the glowing dashboard casting long shadows across our faces. The heavy black ledger sat on the center console between us, a toxic artifact that held the power to destroy everything Bethany had built.
Arthur ran a hand over his tired face. "She's planning to leave the country by the end of the week. She’s liquidating the untraceable assets and transferring them to offshore accounts. She hired me to find the ledger, burn it, and make sure you had an... accident before she boarded her flight."
A cold sweat broke out on my neck. Bethany hadn't just been trying to scare me; she had been plotting my murder while playing the grieving daughter for the cameras.
"We can't just hand the book to the local cops," I said, my mind racing. "Half the precinct is probably on her payroll, just like they were on my father's. We need the feds, and we need her to confess on tape. We need to catch her in the act of trying to buy the ledger and order the hit."
Arthur nodded slowly, the mind of a former detective finally clicking back into gear. "She's arrogant. She thinks she's untouchable right now. If I tell her I have the ledger but I want a bonus to hand it over, she'll agree to a meet. She won't be able to resist taking the book from my hands to ensure it's destroyed."
"Where would she meet you?" I asked.
"There's an old shipyard on the docks," Arthur said. "Your father used to use it to import undeclared goods. It’s abandoned now. Private. No cameras. It’s exactly the kind of place she’d choose to handle dirty business."
I pulled out my phone and dialed the number of the lead detective from the night of my parents' arrest. He was the only cop I trusted, the only one who had looked at my family with genuine disgust rather than deference.
"Detective," I said when he answered. "I have the proof you need to take down my sister. But I need you to bring the FBI, and I need you to do it exactly the way I tell you."
Over the next hour, Arthur and I meticulously crafted the trap. Arthur sent the text to Bethany, demanding a midnight meeting at the shipyard and a cash bonus of five million dollars in exchange for the ledger and confirmation of my death.
Ten agonizing minutes passed before his phone lit up with a reply.

"Midnight. Come alone. If you screw this up, you're dead."
I looked at Arthur, a grim smile crossing my face. The bait was set. Now, we just had to survive the catch.
