Chapter 10 - The New Legacy

Six months later, Julian Vance walked into the lobby of the newly minted Vanguard Medical Center.
He bypassed the executive elevator and walked straight to the VIP recovery wing. The nurses smiled at him as he passed. He gently pushed open the door to a sunlit private suite.
His mother sat in a plush armchair, reading a book, a soft blanket draped over her knees. The harsh cough was gone. The dark circles under her eyes had faded. She looked healthy, peaceful, and radiant.
"Julian," she smiled, setting the book down. "You shouldn't take time off work just for me."
"I own the building, Mom. I think I can take a long lunch," he laughed, sitting beside her.
He had dissolved the corrupt remains of Sterling Investments. Instead of hoarding the wealth, Julian had pivoted Vanguard into a philanthropic juggernaut. He was funding full-ride scholarships for lower-income students, building clinics in forgotten neighborhoods, and investing in brilliant kids who had the wrong zip codes.
His mother reached out, her soft hands holding his. "I'm proud of you, Julian. Not because you're rich. But because you didn't let them make you cruel."

Julian looked out the wide window at the sprawling city skyline. He had spent his childhood believing that people only looked at your clothes and your address. He had spent his youth proving them wrong with a vengeance.
But as he sat there, holding his mother's hand, Julian Vance finally understood the truth. They could look at your shoes all they wanted. But you were the only one who decided where those shoes would walk.
