Chapter 1 - The Truth Unveiled

The silence in the backyard was absolute.
Even the wind seemed to stop blowing through the trees as two hundred teenagers stared at my exposed skin.
Thick, violent burn scars crawled up my arms like twisted vines.
The mottled pink and white tissue wrapped around my collarbones, covered my shoulders, and mapped out a terrifying history across my chest.
My twin sister, Chloe, stood a few feet away with her mouth hanging open.
The microphone she had used to humiliate me was now trembling in her perfectly manicured hand.
She had expected me to be hiding some minor imperfection, something she could laugh at to secure her crown as the perfect twin.
Instead, she had forced me to reveal a landscape of pure trauma.
I looked at the crowd of popular kids, athletes, and cheerleaders whose mocking laughter had died in their throats.
“I didn't want to ruin your party, Chloe,” I said, my voice carrying across the silent water of the pool.
“But you demanded to know what I’ve been hiding for twelve years.”
I took a step closer to her, ignoring the way she instinctively shrank back.
“These scars are the reason you are still alive today.”
Chloe blinked rapidly, her flawless makeup doing nothing to hide the sudden panic in her eyes.
“What are you talking about?” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the pool filter.
“You don't remember because your brain erased the memory to protect you from the guilt,” I told her, the heavy truth finally lifting off my chest.
“When we were six years old, you found a lighter in the guest room and accidentally set the curtains on fire.”
Several guests gasped in shock, their phones still recording every single word.
“The flames trapped you in the corner of the bedroom.”
“I ran through the fire, covered you with my own body, and dragged you out of the house.”
Chloe shook her head violently, taking another step backward until her heels nearly slipped over the edge of the pool.
“No, you're a liar!” she screamed, dropping the microphone onto the wet concrete with a deafening screech.
“Our house burned down because of old wiring, Dad told me so!”
I looked past her and saw our father rushing through the sliding glass doors, his face pale and frantic.
“Dad, tell them she’s lying!” Chloe cried out to him, tears streaming down her face.
Our father stopped dead in his tracks, looking from my scarred body to Chloe’s terrified face.
He didn't rush to comfort her like he always did.
Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and slowly pulled out a heavy, rusted lockbox.

“She isn't lying, Chloe,” my father said, his voice shaking with a dark, heavy grief.
“But Maya isn't telling the whole truth about that night, either.”
