Chapter 10 - A NEW BEGINNING

Six months later.
The trial was a media circus, but it was swift. With the diary, the audio recordings, and the offshore bank records Clara had meticulously documented, the jury deliberated for less than two hours.
Richard was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Chloe took a plea deal and got twenty years.
On a bright Sunday morning, the girls and I returned to the cemetery in Savannah. The air didn't smell like fresh dirt and rain anymore; it smelled like blooming jasmine and sunshine.
We stood in front of Clara’s polished headstone.
There were no crowds this time. No fake tears. No expensive suits. Just a grandfather and his three extraordinary granddaughters.
Lily knelt down and placed a bouquet of vibrant emerald-green orchids against the stone.
"We did it, Mom," Maya said softly, touching the engraved letters of Clara's name. "We're safe. Grandpa is taking really good care of us."

I placed a hand on Maya’s shoulder, looking at the peaceful faces of the girls. The haunted, unreadable expressions they wore at the funeral were gone, replaced by the bright, hopeful smiles of children who finally felt safe.
Clara had left them behind for me to protect. And as we walked away from the grave, hand in hand under the warm Georgia sun, I knew we were going to be just fine.
