Chapter 7 - The Brother's Sin

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone in absolute horror.
David wasn't a naive, innocent husband being manipulated by an evil wife.
He had fully taken over the syndicate's operations three years ago.
"Dad," I whispered, barely able to find my voice.
"David is running the entire organization."
My father violently shook his head, refusing to believe the terrible truth.
"No, Maya, that's impossible," he pleaded desperately.
"He's a high school guidance counselor, he doesn't know anything about crime!"
Suddenly, a bright, blinding set of high beams illuminated the entrance of the mining tunnel.
A sleek black Mercedes SUV pulled slowly into the cavern and stopped blocking our only exit.
The driver's side door opened, and David stepped out into the damp cave.
He wasn't wearing his usual cheap sweater; he was dressed in a meticulously tailored Italian suit.
He held a custom, gold-plated pistol in his right hand.
"I always knew you were entirely too smart for your own good, Maya," David echoed through the cave.
I stepped out of the battered pickup truck, keeping my service weapon aimed directly at his chest.
"You set this whole thing up," I yelled, my hands trembling with rage.
"You poisoned our father to make him look crazy so you could legally take his property and find the drive."
David smiled, a cold, empty, terrifying expression.
"Priscilla is just a very useful, very greedy idiot," David chuckled darkly.
"I needed her family's connections to corrupt the local police and buy off Director Vance."
He slowly raised the gold-plated pistol and aimed it directly at my father's head.
"Give me the drive, Maya, or I will end his miserable life right now."
I gripped my gun tighter, trying to calculate the perfect shot to disarm him without killing him.
But before I could even pull the trigger, David gasped in sudden, shocking pain.
A massive, terrifying gunshot echoed from the dark shadows behind him.
David dropped his weapon and collapsed to his knees, clutching a massive bleeding wound in his shoulder.

From the darkness of the tunnel, Priscilla stepped forward with a smoking shotgun.
"Did you really think you could cut me out of my own family's empire, David?" she sneered.
