Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The Cole Industries skyscraper gleamed in the afternoon sun, a monument to the empire my father had built from nothing. I wore a tailored suit—borrowed from Marcus—that fit perfectly. I no longer looked like the broken ex-con who had shivered on Miranda’s porch. I looked like Harrison Cole’s son.

I walked into the lobby alongside Marcus and six armed federal agents. The security guards didn't even try to stop us; Marcus simply flashed his badge, and the sea of corporate suits parted.

We took the private elevator to the 50th floor. Through the glass walls of the executive boardroom, I could see them.

Miranda was dressed in a pristine white power suit, her smile radiant as she raised a glass of champagne. Preston stood beside her, arrogant and flush with impending wealth, holding a silver pen above a massive stack of legal documents. The board of directors clapped politely.

I didn't knock. I kicked the double doors open. The heavy mahogany banged against the walls like a gunshot.

The room fell dead silent.

Miranda’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished marble floor. Her face drained of all color, turning a sickening, chalky gray. Preston dropped the silver pen, his jaw slackening as he stared at me as if he were looking at an apparition.

“Silas,” one of the older board members gasped. “What is the meaning of this?”

“I apologize for interrupting the celebration,” I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls. I walked to the head of the table, directly facing Miranda. “But there’s a slight issue with the sale of this company. The signatures on those documents are fraudulent.”

“Security!” Miranda shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating. “Get this convicted felon out of my building! He’s trespassing!”

“He’s not trespassing, Mrs. Cole,” Marcus said smoothly, stepping into the room with the federal agents flanking him. “He is the rightful heir to this company. And you are under arrest.”

Preston tried to make a run for the side door, but two agents tackled him, slamming him onto the mahogany table. Handcuffs clicked sharply around his wrists. He began to sob immediately, begging and claiming it was all his mother's idea.

“You have no proof of anything!” Miranda spat, though her hands were shaking violently. “My husband died two years ago! Silas is a thief!”

I pulled the remote from the conference table and pointed it at the massive presentation screen behind her. I pressed play.

The security footage from the server room filled the screen in high definition. Preston and Miranda, framing me in cold blood. The board members erupted into furious murmurs.

I stepped inches from Miranda’s face. She smelled of chemical vanilla and pure terror.

“He didn't die two years ago, Miranda,” I whispered coldly. “I found him. I found Vault 42. It’s over.”

As the agents read her her rights and hauled her away, she didn't fight. She looked utterly hollowed out, her empire of lies collapsing on live feed in front of the most powerful people in the city.
