Chapter 1 - The Standoff

"You can't do this!" Dad shouted, stepping toward Dr. Jenkins. His face was flushed with the kind of rage he usually reserved for when I didn't clean the kitchen fast enough. "I am her father! I know what’s best for her!"

Dr. Jenkins didn't flinch. She stood between my hospital bed and my father like a brick wall in a white coat.

"What's best for her, Mr. Hayes, is not being pushed down a flight of stairs," the doctor said, her voice dropping to a dangerously calm register. "I have already hit the panic button under my desk. Hospital security is right outside that door. If you take one more step toward me or this patient, they will restrain you."

Mom grabbed Dad's arm, her eyes darting around the small ER room. "David, please. Let's just talk to her. Let's explain."

"Explain what, Mrs. Hayes?" Dr. Jenkins asked, her eyes narrowing. "Explain how Clara’s jaw was fractured three years ago and never set properly? Explain how she has defensive bruising on her forearms? I am a mandated reporter. This isn't a discussion."

The door swung open. Two large security guards stepped in, followed closely by a uniformed police officer.

"Is there a problem here, Doctor?" the officer asked, resting his hand on his duty belt.

"Yes, Officer," Dr. Jenkins replied, never taking her eyes off my parents. "I am placing a medical hold on a minor, Clara Hayes, due to suspected severe physical abuse. I need you to escort her parents to the waiting room. They are not to leave the premises until Child Protective Services arrives."

Dad’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. He looked at me, his eyes pleading, demanding that I fix this. That I take the blame like I always did.

"Clara," he said, his voice dripping with manipulation. "Tell them. Tell them you tripped on the rug."

I looked at my swollen, discolored leg. I looked at the doctor who was risking everything to protect a girl she had just met. And for the first time in my sixteen years of life, I didn't whisper the lie.

"I didn't trip," I said, my voice shaking but loud enough for the officer to hear. "Vanessa pushed me."
