Chapter 10 - The Veins of a Fighter

The officer explains that my mother and Marcus escaped through a hidden basement tunnel. But they didn't get far before the police intercepted them at the airport. They were arrested while trying to board a flight to a non-extradition country. My mother is facing decades in prison for fraud, extortion, and conspiracy. Marcus is going away for a very long time for the hit-and-run and attempted arson. Claire has been transferred to a maximum-security psychiatric facility awaiting trial. The toxic nightmare that had plagued my entire life is finally over. A few days later, I am discharged from the hospital and return to my restored home. Grandpa sits in the rocking chair, smiling as he feeds Lily her afternoon bottle. I have legally changed my last name to sever all ties with my mother's legacy. The trust fund money was fully recovered and transferred into a secure account for my daughter. I finally have the peaceful, loving family I always deserved. We are safe, happy, and free from the shadows of my past. Later that evening, the doorbell rings loudly through the quiet house. I open the door to find a small, unmarked wooden box sitting on the porch. There is no return address, only a note written in elegant, blood-red ink. "You handled her exactly as I hoped you would, my beautiful daughter." Inside the box is an ancient silver locket containing a picture of a woman who looks exactly like me. And beneath the photo is a birth certificate proving the woman in prison was never my real mother at all.
