Chapter 2 - The Hospital Interrogation

The ride to County General was a blur of flashing lights and frantic medical jargon.
I held Addie's tiny hand, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years.
When we burst through the emergency room doors, a team of doctors and nurses immediately swarmed her stretcher, whisking her away behind sterile white curtains.
I was left standing in the chaotic hallway, my hands still shaking, my mind racing.
A young, stern-looking woman in a tailored suit approached me, flashing a badge.
"Mrs. Davis? I'm Detective Reynolds. I need to ask you a few questions about what happened tonight."
I nodded numbly, allowing her to lead me into a small, windowless interview room.
I recounted every detail, from the eerie silence of the house to Addie's desperate struggle for air.
When I mentioned Luke's chilling comment—"She needed to be taught a lesson"—the detective's pen stopped moving.
"Did he specify what kind of lesson, Mrs. Davis?"
"No," I whispered. "But the paramedic... he said Luke was at the Mitchell house when their son nearly died."
Detective Reynolds's expression hardened.
"We are aware of your husband's connection to the Mitchell case. However, there was insufficient evidence to charge him."
A wave of nausea washed over me.
"He's a monster," I said, my voice trembling. "He hurt my daughter."
"We need proof, Mrs. Davis. Medical evidence, eyewitness testimony, something concrete."
Just then, a doctor entered the room, his face grim.
"Mrs. Davis, your daughter is stable, but we found something concerning during the examination."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What is it?"
"There are petechial hemorrhages around her neck and eyes. Consistent with severe oxygen deprivation."
He paused, choosing his next words carefully.
"Consistent with strangulation or suffocation."
The room spun.
Luke hadn't just neglected her; he had actively tried to kill her.
"I want him arrested," I demanded, turning to the detective.
"We need to establish a timeline," Reynolds replied. "We need to prove he was the only one with her."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from an unknown number.
I know what he did. Meet me at the old quarry in twenty minutes if you want the proof.
