Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The shockwaves shattered the windows of Mave’s small apartment.

Leo peeked cautiously through the broken blinds, looking down at the street below.

“Boss,” Leo breathed, his eyes wide with shock.

“You need to see this.”

Vincent and Mave rushed to the window.

The street below was completely chaotic.

But the explosions hadn't targeted the apartment building.

They had targeted the five black SUVs that had just arrived carrying Julian’s hit squad.

Dozens of heavily armed men wearing the crest of the Rossi family were currently swarming the street, systematically executing Julian’s surviving mercenaries.

Standing in the center of the carnage was Dante Rossi.

Dante looked up at the third-floor window and offered a mocking, theatrical bow.

“What is going on?” Mave asked, completely bewildered.

“Why is Dante attacking Julian’s men?”

Vincent’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice.

“Because Dante wasn't working with Julian to overthrow me,” Vincent realized aloud.

“Julian was working with Dante, and Dante just betrayed him.”

“Dante used my brother’s greed to divide our forces and bankrupt the syndicate.”

“And now, Dante is wiping out the remaining Costa soldiers to claim the city for himself.”

Mave felt the floor drop out from beneath her.

She had secured the money and saved her sister, but she had inadvertently handed the entire city over to a ruthless psychopath.

Vincent’s burner phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming text message.

He looked down at the screen.

The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him completely pale.

He slowly lowered the phone, turning to look at Mave with an expression of absolute, terrifying horror.

Mave stepped back, her heart pounding frantically.

“What is it, Vincent?” she whispered.

Vincent swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly.

“That message is from my encrypted security network.”

“The funds you transferred to your private account didn't stay there.”

Mave frowned, confused.

“That’s impossible, the account is completely secure.”

Vincent shook his head slowly.

“The moment the funds hit your account, an automated wire transfer triggered, sending the entire treasury to a holding company in Belize.”

Mave’s blood ran completely freezing cold.

The holding company in Belize.

The exact same company she had investigated for the missing thirty thousand dollars that afternoon.

She hadn't outsmarted the mastermind.

She had just unknowingly completed the final step of his master plan.

Before she could process the sheer magnitude of her mistake, the heavy apartment door violently burst open.

A man wearing a pristine, white tactical suit stepped into the living room, holding a suppressed assault rifle.

He lowered his weapon, offering a polite, charming smile.

It wasn't Julian.

It wasn't Dante.

It was Donovan.

Vincent’s supposedly sick chief of staff, the man Mave had replaced at the charity dinner.

“Thank you for moving the money for me, Mave,” Donovan smiled warmly.

“You truly are exceptional at logistics.”
