Chapter 4 - The Fall from Grace

We shattered the remaining glass, tumbling out into the sweltering Manhattan night air.

Gravity pulled us down violently toward the unforgiving concrete of the alleyway below.

I twisted my body in mid-air, ensuring Marco would take the absolute brunt of the massive impact.

We crashed violently into a huge pile of discarded cardboard boxes and overflowing, foul-smelling garbage bags.

The impact knocked the wind entirely out of my lungs, leaving me gasping helplessly in the darkness.

My zip-tied hands dug painfully into my spine, but the garbage had broken my fall just enough to keep me alive.

Marco was groaning in absolute agony beside me, his leg bent at a horrific, unnatural angle.

The dead-man's switch was still securely strapped to his wrist, its red light blinking steadily in the shadows.

I forced myself up to my knees, searching desperately through the trash for a jagged piece of glass or metal.

I found a broken beer bottle and managed to slice through the thick plastic zip ties binding my bruised wrists.

My hands were finally free, but my shoulder was bleeding heavily from the gunshot wound I sustained upstairs.

I looked up at the third-story window, praying Elena and my daughter were escaping down the fire escape like I had silently signaled.

I heard the heavy, rhythmic clanking of metal boots on the rusted iron stairs directly above me.

Elena was climbing down as fast as she could, holding the little girl tightly against her chest.

I stood up, ignoring the agonizing pain radiating through my entire body, and caught them safely at the bottom.

We had to move quickly before Marco regained his senses or his remaining thugs realized what had just happened.

I led them sprinting down the dark alley, stealing a running sedan that a careless delivery driver had left idling on the curb.

We sped away into the night, leaving the Queens apartment and the ticking bomb far behind us in the rearview mirror.

Elena was shaking violently in the passenger seat, her breathing shallow and ragged from the massive exertion.

I knew her medicine was destroyed in the alley, and without it, she would not survive the end of the week.

I told her I was taking us to an underground clinic run by a doctor who owed me his life and absolute loyalty.

I drove recklessly through the city, my mind racing with strategies to reclaim my stolen empire and protect my new family.

We arrived at the hidden facility hidden completely beneath an abandoned warehouse in the industrial sector of Brooklyn.

I carried Elena inside, laying her gently on a sterile steel examination table in the center of the room.

The doctor emerged from the shadows, wearing a surgical mask and holding a syringe filled with a mysterious clear liquid.

I told him she needed immediate respiratory stabilization and a fresh supply of her specific heart medication.

The doctor nodded slowly, stepping forward and plunging the needle directly into Elena's exposed neck.

Elena gasped sharply, her eyes rolling back into her head as her entire body went completely limp on the table.

I grabbed the doctor by the collar, demanding to know what he had just injected into her fragile veins.

The doctor pulled down his surgical mask, revealing a face completely covered in horrific, melted burn scars.

May you like

"It is a paralyzing agent, Vincent," the scarred man whispered, pressing a silver scalpel gently against my daughter's throat.

"And now, you are finally going to pay for the fire that ruined my entire life."
