Chapter 7 - The Mother's Dark Secret

I demanded Trent hand over his unlocked phone, the master drive with the deepfake software, and a signed, handwritten confession from all four boys. Terrified of federal drug charges, they folded in under ten minutes.
I returned home, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest. I had the drives. The nightmare was over.
But when I walked through the front door, Sarah was standing in the living room, packing a suitcase. She looked terrified, but also violently angry.
"What did you do, Arthur?" she screamed. "The Chief just called my boss. They know you threatened his son!"
"I didn't threaten him. I ended him," I said, holding up the flash drive. "Chloe is safe."
Sarah didn't look relieved. She looked sick. "You idiot," she hissed. "I knew about the bullying for a month! I told her to just do their homework so it would go away! If you expose the Vances, I lose my job at the clinic! They own the building!"
I stopped dead in my tracks.
My own wife knew. She had watched our daughter wither away, crying herself to sleep, and she chose her paycheck and her social standing over her own child's life.
"Get out," I said quietly.

"Arthur—"
"Get out of my house!" I roared. Sarah grabbed her bags and ran.
