Chapter 2 - The Silent Execution

I raised my hands slowly, keeping my body positioned firmly between the blinding light and Nora.
The man holding the weapon stepped out of the shadows, wearing black tactical gear and a ballistic mask.
He did not say a word, raising a suppressed pistol with the cold efficiency of a professional executioner.
I calculated the distance between us, knowing my concealed weapon was completely useless while his laser was on my chest.
Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, a massive section of the ceiling suddenly gave way behind him.
A heavy rusted pipe crashed down from the old plumbing system, striking the gunman directly on the shoulder.
His shot went wide, the suppressed bullet ricocheting off the brick wall just inches from my face.
I lunged forward in the darkness, tackling the massive man to the damp dirt floor.
We wrestled violently in the mud, his heavy combat boots kicking wildly against my ribs.
I managed to pin his gun arm down with my knee, delivering a devastating blow to his masked face.
The man went limp, and I quickly stripped the tactical flashlight and the suppressed weapon from his hands.
I pulled Nora to her feet, asking if the stray bullet had hit her.
She shook her head rapidly, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the unconscious mercenary.
I checked the man's pockets and found a detailed blueprint of my estate with the tunnel system explicitly highlighted.
Carmine had clearly spent months planning this entire coup right under my nose.
We hurried down the remaining length of the tunnel, finally reaching a heavy iron door rusted shut by decades of moisture.
I used the mercenary's heavy steel flashlight to bash the old iron padlock until the metal finally fractured.
We pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the cavernous, echoing expanse of an abandoned subway station.
The faint glow of streetlights filtered down through a distant street grating, illuminating the decaying platform.
I told Nora we needed to find a secure phone to contact the few men I could still blindly trust.
As soon as I spoke, the abandoned station was suddenly illuminated by the blinding headlights of an armored SUV idling on the tracks.

The vehicle's doors swung open simultaneously, and a voice I recognized instantly echoed through a bullhorn.
Carmine ordered us to surrender, revealing that the tunnel escape was nothing but a calculated trap.
