Chapter 3 - The Escape Route

Thick, suffocating black smoke began pouring into the small cafe.

The fire spread unnaturally fast, fueled by the spilled cooking oil in the ruined kitchen.

"We need to evacuate right now!" Petra shouted, coughing violently into her sleeve.

"The front and back exits are completely blocked by flames," Toby reported in a panic.

Dorian looked at Claire, whose face was pale with sheer terror.

"Is there a basement?" Dorian asked urgently.

Claire nodded and pointed to a heavy wooden trapdoor hidden beneath a decorative rug.

"It is an old Prohibition cellar," Claire explained.

"The building used to be a speakeasy a hundred years ago."

Bull immediately ripped the rug away and hauled the heavy wooden door open with one hand.

A dark, narrow stone staircase led down into the freezing earth.

"Go," Dorian commanded, pushing Claire and Maddie toward the stairs.

The guards quickly filtered down into the basement as the burning ceiling above them began to groan.

Dorian was the last one to descend, slamming the trapdoor shut against the roaring fire.

The basement was damp, terribly cold, and smelled strongly of mildew.

Toby clicked on a heavy tactical flashlight, illuminating the crumbling brick walls.

"There has to be a smuggler's tunnel down here," Dorian said, scanning the dark room.

"Look for a hollow wall."

The guards began tapping frantically against the ancient bricks with the butts of their guns.

Claire held Maddie tightly, trying to calm the little girl's terrified sobs.

Dorian walked past a dusty wooden shelf and suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.

He aimed his bright flashlight at a faded, silver-framed photograph sitting on the top shelf.

It was a picture of a young man in a military uniform standing next to a classic car.

Dorian's hands began to shake uncontrollably.

He carefully picked up the photograph and turned to Claire.

"Who is this man?" Dorian asked, his voice completely devoid of its usual lethal calm.

Claire wiped a tear from her soot-stained cheek.

"That is my father, Arthur Whitaker," she answered softly.

"He died when I was a teenager."

Dorian stared at the photograph in absolute disbelief.

Arthur Whitaker was the exact same man who had pulled Dorian's father out of a burning car thirty years ago.

Before Dorian could process the impossible coincidence, the basement wall suddenly exploded inward.
