Chapter 1 - The Promise

I looked down at the six-year-old boy whose eyes were filled with sheer terror.
"I will never send any of you away," I whispered, making sure he could hear the absolute certainty in my voice.
The courtroom remained completely silent for what felt like an eternity.
Judge Miller picked up his pen and stared down at the social worker.
"Temporary emergency guardianship is granted to Mr. Carter for exactly seventy-two hours," the judge announced.
The social worker jumped to her feet in protest.
"Your Honor, this man is completely unvetted and his residence has not been cleared for one child, let alone five!" she argued.
"Then you will conduct a thorough home inspection tomorrow morning at eight," Judge Miller replied coldly.
He turned his gaze back to me.
"Mr. Carter, if your home fails this inspection, these children will go back into the system immediately."
I nodded, feeling the immense weight of the promise I had just made.
We walked out of that courthouse into the freezing autumn rain.
I spent the last of my cash on a battered minivan I found on a local marketplace group just hours before the hearing.
I loaded all five terrified kids into the secondhand child seats I had hastily installed.
My heart was hammering wildly against my ribs.
I had less than twenty-four hours to make my messy workshop look like a safe and loving haven.
During the drive, none of the children spoke a single word.
The oldest boy, Leo, kept his arm wrapped protectively around his little sister.
When we finally pulled up to my driveway, I turned around and forced a reassuring smile.
"We are home," I told them gently.
I unbuckled the youngest, a baby girl whose cheeks were stained with dried tears.
Together, we walked up the cracked concrete steps to my front door.
I reached into my soaking wet jacket pocket for my keys.
That was when I noticed the bright yellow piece of paper taped aggressively to the wood.
I pulled it off, my blood running completely cold as I read the bold print.
It was a formal eviction notice.
May you like
The property had been sold, and I was ordered to vacate the premises by midnight tonight.
And standing in the shadows of the porch was my new landlord, holding a heavy metal padlock and a crowbar.
